How Not to Die in College: Not Falling Asleep in Class

No lie, it’s been a long time since I’ve been an undergraduate freshman, but now that I’m a graduate student in a new school and in a new state, I’m finding many parallels to then and now. To keep things interesting I will provide some sage-like advice from someone who has already graduated, in my series HOW NOT TO DIE IN COLLEGE (HOW NOT TO DIE INC).

How Not to Die In College Presents:

Not Falling Asleep in Class

College is exhausting. Like stupid exhausting, it will run you ragged before the sun comes up. All nighters, 8am classes, partying the night before, cram sessions, it’s crazy to even think about it all. Once you get to class, sitting in a slightly comfortable seat, while a teacher reads at you; it takes you back like your parents used to read to you before you went to sleep when you were 4, it’s tempting to fall asleep. To avoid the embarrassment of ending up like this person below follow these tips.

Bring your Laptop, Netbook, or Ipad.

No lie. I’m typing this article in class now just to stay awake. Having the internet at the tip of your fingerprints and right in front of your eyes is sure to keep you stimulated. You can kill 1 hour of time on facebook, or reddit alone without even blinking. Just be weary of a few things 1) turn your speakers OFF, 2) make sure to talk and at least pay attention teachers can tell when you are just on Facebook, and not typing notes.

Eat or Drink

We all get excited about food. Grab a snack, or get a sip of COLD water. The small boost of energy you get from food will help you stay awake at least for another 15 minutes. If it’s food, eat it slow, the longer it takes for you to finish the longer you’ll stay awake.

Pull out a pack of Double Mint in class, and suddenly you’re everyone’s best friend. Get your mouth moving, get a spike of sugar, blow a bubble or 1,000. Anything to do to keep your body from getting too relaxed. Spicy or sugary, the choice is up to you.

Get your brain working. You don’t have to write notes, that may exhaust you even more. Make a to-do-list. Write all the things you’d rather be doing. Write an essay. Write a comment on this article at Write an email to an old friend. There’s always something to write.

Step 1.

Step 2.

Whichever you choose, try and stay awake as best you can. You only four years (0r 8 for some of you) to do your best here. You have to attend class, and put your best foot forward each time. To stay up, stay awake, and don’t let your teacher catch you sleeping.
