‘You’re Not Special’: Speech Was Honest or Mean?
“Contrary to what your U9 soccer trophy suggests, your glowing seventh grade report card, despite every assurance of a certain corpulent purple dinosaur, that nice Mister Rogers and your batty Aunt Sylvia, no matter how often your maternal caped crusader has swooped in to save you… you’re nothing special.”
If that isn’t honest enough he goes on to say:
“Think about this: even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.”
The worst part is, he was giving this commencement speech to a class of special ed kids. Pretty fucked up right! Just kidding. That last part isn’t true. Either way though in my humble unspecial opinion it was mighty ballzy to be that honesty. Props!
If you have 12 minutes to spend I assure you it wont be wasted.
Was the speech honest or mean spirited?
